Biographical / Historical
Nancy Jane Henry (1926-2018), of Richmond, Virginia, attended Madison College from 1944 to 1945. While a student, Henry was involved in multiple organizations and clubs including the Cotillion Club, Porpoise Club, and YWCA. Henry transferred to Duke University after one year and received a bachelor's degree in psychology. In 1949, she married Thomas Barker Dameron, whom she met while he was attending Duke Medical School.
Scope and Contents
One bound scrapbook documenting Nancy Jane Henry's time as a student at Madison College from 1944 to 1945. The scrapbook contains ephemera, photographs, cards, telegrams, newspaper clippings, tickets, overnight trip slips, handwritten annotations, and locks of hair.
Numerous Madison College-issued receipts, grade reports, notices, and sign-out slips document Henry's overnight trips to Richmond and Roanoke, requests for dates, class absences, and disciplinary call downs. Multiple letters and cards from clubs invite Henry to become a member. Tipped-in correspondence confirms that Henry was a patron of the Miles Music Company (35 Court Square) and had her radio serviced there. Several pages contain ephemera related to sorority rush activities.
Photographs, ephemera, and annotations reference a presumed boyfriend named Joe Ward who was a student at Duke University.
