Acquisition Information

Six boxes came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court records from Lancaster County under the accession number 41560. One box (1135004) had no accession number.

Historical Information

Lancaster County was probably named for the English county. The county was formed sometime between 20 March and 16 September 1651 from Northumberland and York counties. The county court first met on 1 January 1652.

Scope and Content

Lancaster County (Va.) Records, circa 1766-1913, consist of the following series: Election Records, Fiduciary Records, Land Records, Road and Bridge Records, Court Records (subfield series include Criminal Records, Judgments and Clerks' Records), Tax and Fiscal Records, Wills, Bonds/Commissions/Oaths and County Administrative Records (subfield series include Board of Supervisors Records: Road and Bridge Records.)
