These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Accomack County.

Historical Information

Accomack County was named for the Accomac Indians, who lived on the eastern Shore at the time of the first English settlement in Virginia. One of the original eight shires established in 1634, Accomac County (spelled without a k) became Northampton County in 1643. The present country was formed from Northampton about 1663. In 1940 the General Assembly adopted the county's present spelling.

Military and Pension Records, 1778-1861, undated, consists of muster delinquents, 1778; petitions for military exemptions, 1778-180; allowance for soldiers' wives, 1783; Revolutionary War pension applications related to Bloxom family members, 1792, 1843-1847; muster fines 1823; circulars for appointment of officers, 1796, and list of pensioners, 1798; receipts related to purchase of ordinances and supplies, 1861; orders confirming heirs of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 veterans, 1806-1864 circa; military drills handbook, undated; and miscellany.
