Scope and Content
Giles County (Va.) Arithmetic Book, 1800s circa, is a volume of handwritten mathematical exercises including geometry, scale, logarithms, military orders by the logarithms, trigonometry, heights, distances, and several exercises related to surveying by and without the chain. Many of the exercises in the book seem related to surveying and are illustrated to demonstrate the problem and the solution.
Following the arithmetic book on pp. 121-135 are nine undated plats that may have been completed by Samuel J. Pearis. The land is principally if not all located in Kanawha County, now West Virginia.
