Acquisition Information

These items came to the Library of Virginia in 2004 in a transfer.

Historical Information

Buckingham County probably was named either for the English county or for the duke of Buckingham. According to some sources, however, the name came from Archibald Cary's tract of land called Buckingham, on what was then Willis's Creek. It was formed from Albemarle County in 1761.

The records were replevined by the Library of Virginia following the trial entitled Commonwealth of Virginia vs. Larry I. Vass heard in Henrico County Circuit Court in November 1972.

Records were destroyed by fire in 1869.

Scope and Content

Buckingham County Court Records, (Va.), 1841-1847. The collection contains three documents removed from Buckingham County court records: a judgment of debt, Leitch vs. Leitch, 1841; a letter from the court case, Kidd vs. Williams, 1846; and court orders, 1841 and 1847.
