Acquisition Information

This item came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from the city of Lynchburg.

Historical Information

The city of Lynchburg was established in 1786. It was incorporated as a town in 1805 and as a city in 1852. Parts of Campbell and Bedford counties were annexed in 1976.

This register may have been taken at the behest of the Federal Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. See the minutes of the Lynchburg city council for 6 August 1865 in Lynchburg City Council Minute Book, 1851-1865, City of Lynchburg, Reel 41, Local Government Records Collection, Library of Virginia.

Scope and Content

The Registry of the Colored Population, 1865, is a census of the African-American population of the city of Lynchburg. It lists the name, marital status, names of children, name and residence of late owner, whether born free, and whether the individual possesses a certificate of residence and a certificate of occupation. It contains an index that records in alphabetical order the names of the individuals and the page where their information can be found within the registry.
