Historical Information

Northumberland County was formed about 1645.

An act passed by the Virginia legislature in 1803 required every free negro or mulatto to be registered and numbered in a book to be kept by the county clerk.

Scope and Content

Record of food and clothing issued to Negroes at Northumberland House Land, 1844-1849, lists the name and accounts for each person who received food or clothing. (No index)

Births of Negroes, 1841-1857, lists the name and birthdate of each person listed. (No index, one page)

List of Free Negroes, n.d., lists the name, sex, age and occupation of each person listed. (No index)

Register of Free Negroes, 1803-1852, of Northumberland County lists the registration number, name, age, skin color, stature, marks or scars, in what court the person was emancipated or whether the person was born free. Some clerks recorded additional information not required by law. (No index)
