Historical Information
Grayson County was named for William Grayson, a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1787 and one of the first two United States senators from Virginia. It was formed from Wythe County in 1792, and a part of Patrick County was added in 1810.
Scope and Content
Grayson County (Va.) Court Records, 1832-1908, contains Common Law Rule Book, Volume 1, 1832-1908; Chancery Executions, Volume 1, 1834-1907; Common Law Process Book, Volume 1, 1832-1875; and Judgment Lien Docket and Execution Book, 1895-1908.
These volumes were originally created by the County Court, the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery, and the Circuit Court.

Common Law Rule Book, Volume 1, 1832-1908 is a record of Common Law suits heard in Rules. Rules was a session of the Court. Common Law suits were first heard in the Rules Session before they were heard in the Common Law Court. Some suits never made it out of the Rules Sessions.
Chancery Executions, Volume 1, 1834-1907 is a list of court orders directing a sheriff or other officer to enforce decrees made in Chancery Court.
Common Law Process Book, Volume 1, 1832-1875 is a list of processes ordered in the Common Law Court to acquire or exercise jurisdiction over a person or a specific property.
This book contains brief entries concerning liens on property made as a result of a judgment. The Execution Book is a list of court orders directing a sheriff or other officer to enforce orders of the County and Circuit Courts.
