Acquisition Information
Will Book Liber Z, 1699-1709, was created by staff from the Virginia State Library (now the Library of Virginia) under the accession number 21241 from documents lent by the Circuit Court Clerk. Will Book Liber M, 1729-1748, came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court records from Stafford County.
Historical Information
Stafford County was named for the English county. It was formed from Westmoreland County in 1664. Part of King George County was added in 1777. The county seat is Stafford.
Many pre-Civil War court records were lost to vandalism by Union troops during the Civil War. A few volumes that record deeds, court orders, and wills exist.
The will books found in this collection were originally created by the County Court.
Scope and Content
Stafford County (Va.) Will Books Libers Z and M, 1699-1709; 1729-1748. The will books include the name of testators, lists of heirs and the year the wills were proven in court and probate records such as inventories and appraisements. These volumes also includes deeds. Will Book Liber Z does not have an index but Will Book Liber M does have an index.
