These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Brunswick County.

Historical Information

Brunswick County was formed in 1720 from Prince George County. Parts of Isle of Wight and Surry Counties were added in 1732.

Created in 1720 (county government established in June 1732). Most loose records prior to 1781 are missing.Pre-1781 volumes that record deeds, court orders, and wills exist.

Scope and Content

Deed Books, 1783-1785 of Brunswick County Court. The deed book records the name of the grantor and grantee, the residence of both individuals and the description of property being sold or transferred. The volume has an index which contains the first and last names of both parties. It is arranged alphabetically from A-Z.

Will Books, 1739-1861, of Brunswick County Court. The will book includes the name of testator, list of heirs and year the wills were proven in court and probate records such as inventories and appraisements. All the will books have indexes.
