Historical Information

Scott County was named for Winfield Scott, a native of Virginia, in recognition of his victories during the War of 1812. It was formed from Lee, Russell, and Washington Counties in 1814.

Scope and Content

Scott County (Va.) Court Records, 1815-1870. The collection contains various court records, as follows: Overseers of the Poor indentures for James Coles, 1819, Joseph Brown, 1820, and James Parker, 1822; Bonds, Commissions, and Oaths of various county officials, 1815-1858; scattered records from judgments and commonwealth causes, 1847-1868; an inventory of land owned by Jerry Bryan, 1815; a U.S. Army paymaster receipt for money paid to William P. Agnar, 1870; and a letter of introduction for Charles W. Kilgore to Richmond merchants, 1852.

The court records include a deposition from the case, Shelton vs. Page, 1866; a letter in regard to the possible judgment of Shoemaker or Bison vs. Mann, 1853; the judgment Spurrier vs. Hanly, 1866 Mar., and an indictment from the criminal case, Commonwealth vs. Nickels, 1861.
