Biographical/Historical Information

Julian Calx Ruffin was born 14 July 1821 to the noted agriculturalist and editor Edmund Ruffin (1794-1865) and Susan Hutchings Travis Ruffin (1793-1846) of Prince George County, Virginia. Ruffin attended preparatory school in Charlottesville, Virginia, then the College of William & Mary, from which he graduated in 1839. Ruffin helped his father edit the FARMERS' REGISTER for three years. He settled at Ruthven in 1843, becoming a planter. Ruffin worked in the fields beside his slaves and also worked on the public roads in the county. He married Charlotte Meade in 1852, and they had five children. Ruffin enlisted in the Virginia Light Artillery, 12th battalion, during the Civil War, and was killed 16 May 1864 at Drewry's Bluff in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He was buried in Blanford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia.

Journal, 4 January 1848-24 December 1858, of Julian Calx Ruffin (1821-1864), owner of Ruthven in Prince George County, Virginia, detailing Ruffin's agricultural practices and observations of the weather. Also records Ruffin's business dealings and work on the public road.
