In 1876 he moved to Richmond, Virginia, and in 1886 established an insurance and real estate firm which dealt with property mainly located in Manchester. Adamson was instrumental in the establishment of the Mechanics and Merchants Bank and served as its president until the time of his death. At various other times Adamson served on the board of directors or was president of The Leader Company, publishers of the Evening Leader, the Manchester Light, Heat, and Power Company, the Mason Park Land Company, and the Seaboard Security Corporation.
After Adamson's death, his sone Thomas Darnley Adamson (1890-1967) continued the company until its purchase in 1961 by John R. Garnett.
