Biographical/Historical Information

The Third African Baptist Church was dedicated on 30 May 1858. On 17 July, the church was officially organized under the supervision of Grace Baptist Church, a white congregation, and the name of the church was changed to Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Consists of seventeen volumes denoted by letters.

Miscellaneous reel 1088: a) Minute Book, 1858-1872, containing minutes which cover the period 17 July 1858 - 11 November 1872, b) Minute Book 1858-1876, containing duplicate minutes of Minute Book 1858-1872, but also containing minutes through 11 December 1876, as well as the church constitutions, baptisms, deaths, and matters of church business and discipline; c) Clerk's Minute Book No. 3, 1879-1883, containing minutes covering the period 1 January 1879 - 12 December 1883, consisting of matters of church business and discipline; d) Records, 1892-1904, 1921, consisting of minutes regarding church business and discipline, covering the period 11 January 1892 - 4 July 1904; e) Minute Book, 1895-1898, specifically 6 August 1895 - 11 April 1898; f) Minute Book, 1898-1899; g) Order Book, 1908-1911, covering 12 July 1908 - 26 November 1911; and h) Minute Book, 1910-1925, specifically covering 5 September 1910 - 12 October 1925, and a list of deaths.

This group was a chapter of the Independent Order of St. Luke, a benevolent society established by Maggie Lena Walker; q) Loose Papers, 1897-1975, including correspondence and items concerning finances and business meetings.
