Biographical/Historical Information

Asa Dupuy was born 7 January 1788 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, to James Dupuy (1758-1823) and Mary Purnell Dupuy (1763-1828). Asa Dupuy became the presiding justice of Prince Edward County and represented the county in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1820 to 1830, 1831-1832, and 1833-1835. Dupuy also served as a trustee and treasurer of Hampden-Sydney College. He married Emily Howe (1811-1883) of Massachusetts, and they had five children. Asa Dupuy died 2 January 1848. His brother, Joseph Dupuy, was born 12 December 1797. He became a colonel in the 11th Brigade, 1st division of the Virginia militia. Joseph Dupuy married first, Mary Dupuy Edmunds (d. 1839) 15 May 1834, and second, Sarah Watkins Walker (d. 1864) 21 December 1842. Dupuy and his first wife had no children, and he and his second wife had nine. Joseph Dupuy died 18 January 1867.

Scope and Content Information

Papers, 1810-1866, of the Dupuy family of Prince Edward County, Virginia, consisting of: a) accounts, 1815-1829, of Asa Dupuy (1788-1848) as administrator of the estate of Thomas Walton, including accounts, receipts, and depositions; b) accounts, 1810-1825, of Asa and Joseph Dupuy (1797-1867) with John Purnall (d. 1825) of Prince Edward County, including receipts and estate papers (part of this is in oversized personal papers. Also see accession 20612); c) accounts of Joseph Dupuy and Robert J. Smith as executors of the estate of John Watson (d. 1856) of Prince Edward County, including Watson's will, lists of monies sent to emancipated slaves, correspondence from emancipated slaves in Liberia, and court papers involving Watson's former slaves and his executor (see also accession 21780); d) will and estate papers of James Watson (d. 1824) of Prince Edward County; e) estimates, proposals and subscription lists for a proposed Presbyterian church to be built in Prince Edward County; and f) miscellaneous records including a Revolutionary pension claim by William Vaughan of Prince Edward County, receipts, and the account of John Hamilton's estate with David F. Womack.
