Scope and Content Information
Consists of correspondence from Major Elias Langham, superintendent of the arsenal, to Col. Thomas Meriwether and Capt. Samuel Coleman regarding the Point of Fork Arsenal in Fluvanna County, Virginia. The correspondence primarily relates to the purchase of supplies and arms for the expansion of the arsenal. Langham corresponded with Col. Meriwether between 1787 and 1789 and Capt. Coleman between 1789 and 1792. A document providing the advice of the Council of State from March 20, 1787, can also be found. The Council advised that two magazines be erected at the arsenal, that the arsenal be capable of holding 15,000 stand of arms and thirty tons of powder, and that Langham continue as superintendent. There is also a list of negroes employed as blacksmiths and artisans at the arsenal dated Jan. 1, 1787.
