Biographical/Historical Information

Francis Jerdone, born in Scotland, came to Virginia about 1750. A merchant in Louisa County, he built Jerdone Castle ca. 1752. He married Sarah Macon (1731/2-1818) of New Kent County. One of their sons, William, married into the Coleman family into whose hands the plantation passed.

Capt. Clayton G. Coleman and his wife Anna Breeden acquired Jerdone Castle in the 1850s.

Scope and Content Information

The Jerdones, Francis, his wife Sarah Macon, son, Francis, Jr., then granddaughter Sarah Jerdone Coleman and her son Clayton G. Coleman, Jr. recorded the slave births from 1761-1865, and the lists of tithables for Albemarle, Louisa, and Spotsylvania counties for which the family was responsible. The donor, Lucy Singleton Coleman, appended a prefactory note which outlines the history of the family and the provenance of this book.
