Historical and Biographical Information

The George Mason Junior Woman’s Club of Fairfax was chartered in 1965 as a member of the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs and General Federation of Women’s Clubs. The club was founded to provide personal enrichment and awareness of local, national, and world affairs through community service for women aged 18 to 35. The club organized educational and creative programs and social events for its members. The club participated in local events, including decorating cars for and marching in the City of Fairfax’s Fourth of July Parade, donating baked goods for the city’s Old Town Hall Day, and selling refreshment’s at a semi-annual art fair sponsored by the Fairfax County Department of Recreation. The club’s charitable activities included visiting residents at local nursing homes, supporting scholarships for Camp Easter Seal, forming a children’s theatre, establishing college scholarships, furnishing the student lounge at George Mason College (now George Mason University), volunteering at the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute, supporting Ship HOPE, conducting advertising sales campaigns to raise money for the Lions club, and establishing a library at the Virginia State Prison Road Camp 30. The club also volunteered for and promoted national-scale social and charitable causes, including control of pollution and humane treatment of prisoners of war.
