Acquisition Information:

W&M Special Collections Research Center began acquiring and collecting Tyler family papers in 1922 and the collection has grown considerably since. The vast majority of this collection was donated by generous family and friends of the Tyler family between 1922 and 2002, with the bulk of the collection being donated to in 1949 by Mrs. Sue Ruffin Tyler and in 1955 by the children of Lyon G. Tyler. Some materials in this collection were purchased by W&M Special Collections Research Center. Acc. 1984.50 was received on 11/28/1984. Acc. 1985.07 was purchased and received on 3/6/1985. Acc. 1988.31 was received on 8/19/1988. Acc. 1989.05 was received on 2/7/1989.


Biographical Information:

Lyon Gardiner Tyler was the son of John Tyler (1790-1862) and his second wife Julia Gardiner Tyler. He received a master's degree from the University of Virginia and was professor at the College of William and Mary and principal of Memphis Academy. He established a law practice in Richmond and served in the Virginia House of Delegates. He became president of William and Mary in 1888, serving until 1919. Tyler married twice, to Anne Baker Tucker Tyler (1860-1921) and to Sue Ruffin Tyler who died in 1953. Tyler founded the William and Mary Quarterly and Tyler's Quarterly and was the author of the Letters and Times of the Tylers, Parties and Patronage in the United States, England in America and History of Virginia: Volume II The Federal Period. He edited Men of Mark in Virginia, Narratives of Early Virginia and the Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography. Tyler served as president of the College of William and Mary from 1888 until 1919.

Papers, 1868-1951, of Lyon Gardiner Tyler, his wives Anne Baker Tucker Tyler and Sue Ruffin Tyler and his descendants. Includes personal correspondence and correspondence relating to American Historical Association, Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, Colonial Williamsburg, Cooperative Education Commission of Virginia, Equal Suffrage League of Virginia, Jamestown Exposition, New York Southern Society, Sons of the Revolution, Virginia Board of Education, Virginia Historical Society, Virginia Mechanics Institute, Wakefield National Memorial Association, Yorktown Sesquicentennial, and Virginia State Library Board; manuscript volumes of poetry; and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings.

Financial records of the Lyon Gardiner Tyler Family, ca. 1,360 pieces, 1887-1950 (but mainly 1929-1949). Routine household accounts run up at stores in Williamsburg, Richmond, Providence Forge, and in Charles City Co., Va., for food, supplies, kerosene, car repairs, medical care, and running the farm. Also includes county taxes for James City County and Chalres City County, insurance education of Julia Tyler at Wellesley and his youngest sons at St. Christopher's School, and the Collge of William and Mary, stock transactions, and postage.
