Conditions Governing Access:

The Bruton Parish Church Archives are deposited in Swem Library. Except for some confidential material, they are open to the public. Only the microfilm of the eighteenth-century parish register may be used. It is suggested the Manuscripts and Rare Books Librarian at Swem Library be contacted before coming to use the collection. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, such as the Virginia Public Records Act (Code of Virginia. § 42.1-76-91); and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (Code of Virginia § 2.2-3705.5). Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. If sensitive material is found in this collection, please contact a staff member immediately. Held by Bruton Parish Church until 1991. Certain parish registers remain at the church. Please contact the Manuscripts and Rare Books Librarian before coming to use the collection.

Processing Information:

The collection was previously processed by various members of the Special Collections Research Center staff prior to 2008. In 2008-2009 Nichole Lidstrom arranged and described the records of Bruton Parish Church bringing together the various accessions into a single record group. Acc. 2013.246 accessioned and minimally processed by Steven Bookman, University Archives Specialist, in October 2013.
