Ownership and Custodial History
The correspondence in this collection was received by Rosalie Womack while she was a student at State Female Normal School.
These items were donated to the Greenwood Library Archives on December 9, 2021 by Pauline Womack Spencer, a niece of Rosalie
Womack.
Rosalie Womack of Prince Edward County, Virginia was born in 1871 to Edward Lockett and Sallie Emmett Womack. In 1890, she
enrolled at then-State Female Normal School from where she earned her diploma in June 1893. In 1896, Womack married William
Henderson, a farmer from Keysville, Virginia.
The majority of the correspondence in this collection, which dates from 1891 to 1893, was written by J.W. Singleton, a traveling
salesman from Prince Edward County and a suitor of Rosalie Womack. The remainder of the correspondence was written by family
and friends of Rosalie Womack. In addition to the known correspondents in this collection are three pieces of correspondence
for whom only the first name is known, Martha, W.H., and Willie.
