Scope and Contents

The collection contains 73 original letters and documents of the Lee family, as well as over a dozen items related to other Washington and Lee collections. In addition to Robert E. Lee, other family members represented in the collection include his children, his wife, his parents-in-law, his nephew Fitzhugh, Richard Henry Lee, and Francis Lightfoot Lee. Unrelated correspondants include Margaret Junkin Preston, General P. G. T. Beauregard, and General Joseph E. Johnston.

The sixteen R.E. Lee items cover a date span of 22 years from 1847 through 1869. There are 10 by his wife, Mary Randolph Custis Lee, ranging from the early 1850s in Baltimore, Maryland to shortly before her death in Lexington, Virginia in 1873.

  • 1850s

Note: See William Henry Fitzhugh Lee's letter of Feb. 15, 1852 from Baltimore for another ALS by Mary R. Custis Lee which she added on to his letter to his brother Custis at the U.S. Military Academy.

    • Baltimore, to "My dear Abbey" (presumably Abbey Louise Peters (Cook). Says Mary is 15, so that would put this letter at about 1850.
      22 August N.D.
    • Arlington, Concerns G. W. P.'s book on Washington which was copyrighted in 1859 and published in 1860. From internal evidence, then, this must have been in the late 1850s
      11 February N.D.
  • 1860s
    • Note on reverse says "Letter received by Abbey L. Cook from Richmond Mrs. Robert E. Lee-Gen. C. S. A. at New York Jan 27th 1865"

    • May 22 N.D. to "My dear Letty." Internal evidence suggests c. 1868
    • Sunday 29th August N.D. Internal evidence suggests 1869 (S.S. Lee died in 1869). Written from Rockbridge Baths.
    • Note to "My dear Miss Letty" 5th July N.D. from the Hot. 186-?
  • 1870s
