Historical Information

James and Julia Kyle donated land in Speedwell, Wythe County, Virginia in 1882 for the express purpose of erecting a Quaker meeting house. Although a Methodist, Julia Kyle proved influential in the construction of the Quaker church. After her death, the Commonwealth Attorney's office of Wythe County sold the property to a group of Lutherans in Speedwell for $250 in the spring of 1904. A new congregation was dedicated on 29 May 1904, led by Rev. K. Y. Umberger, pastor of the Cripple Creek area parish. The church was a concrete structure with four large columns and could seat 200 people.

Rev. D. S. Fox assumed the pastorate in 1906 when Rev. Umberger moved to Bristol, Virginia. The membership of St. Andrew's Church gradually declined in the early 1920s and disbanded in 1927. A brief revival occurred in the 1930s when members who had not transferred to other churches requested Rev. M. D. Huddle to perform services twice monthly. Once again attendance dropped and services ceased. The church building, however, still stands.

Scope and Content

The St. Andrew's Lutheran Church Records consist of two volumes, a membership book and a treasurer's account book. The membership book contains a copy of the church's constitution, membership rosters for 1904, 1916, and 1917, and historical sketches dating 1907 and 1938. An analysis by pagination follows: Constitution p. [i-ii]; historical sketch covering 1882-1907, p. 1-5; membership roster for 1904, p. 6-9; transfer records for Kyle family, p. 12; membership roster 1 November 1916, p. 13; historical sketch covering 1930-1938, p. 15-16; membership roster 1937, p. 17.

The treasurer's account book lists monthly offerings for individuals from 1915 to 1924.
