Acquisition Information

Donated by Ruth Ann Chitwood in 2001 as part of the W. R. Chitwood Collection.

Custodial History

Dr. W. R. Chitwood obtained the document from Ruby Smith, branch librarian at the Wythe County Public Library in 1984. A student at Concord College in West Virginia had discovered the documents in a library book and mailed them to the Wythe County Library in August 1980.

Biographical Information

Both Senah Halsey and Rachel Halsey were daughters of Wythe County farmer Stephen Halsey who died in 1859. Senah Halsey married James Ingram in 1840 and her sister, Rachel Halsey, married Richard R. Farmer in 1845.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of two documents. One is an authorization by Stephen Halsey for a marriage license to be issued by the Wythe County Clerk for the marriage of Senah Halsey and James Ingram, dated 16 April 1840. Another document in a marriage license for Richard R. Farmer and Rachel Halsey, issued by J. P. Mathews, Wythe County Clerk on 17 November 1845.
