Donated by Ruth Ann Chitwood in 2001 as part of the W. R. Chitwood Collection.

Biographical Information

The son of John Poole and Elizabeth Arnold, Lindsey Gleaves Poole was born on 31 July 1873. He married Minnie Nora Martin (1882-1965) on 12 February 1907 and had one son, James William Poole (1908-1974). Poole operated a lumber hauling business as well as a taxi company. He also was co-owner of Shores Motor Company which opened in 1911 providing garage storage, repairs, supplies, and fuel for Wythe County motorists. Poole died on 27 October 1952 and is buried in East End Cemetery in Wytheville, Virginia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of six deeds between Lindsey Gleaves Poole and Nora Martin Poole and others regarding the Trinkle Addition in the western end of Wytheville, part of the original Wythe Improvement Company property.

Re: block 20 of the Trinkle Addition in the western end of Wytheville. This deed includes a stipulation that Poole not convey the land to any persons or corporation whose members or stockholders are of African descent.
