Elmira Rich Hurt, born 22 July 1841 in Wytheville, Virginia, was the daughter of furniture maker Fleming Kean Rich and Mary Polly Thompson Johnson Rich. She married Joseph Hurt around 1860 or 1861. Joseph Hurt (1832-1880) served in the Confederate Army and owned a store in Wytheville. He died on 20 March 1880, leaving Elmira Hurt with four surviving children including Mary Hurt Davidson (1862-1956), Walter Hurt, Fleming Hurt, and Willie Hurt Jones. A daughter, Helen Lee Hurt (1870-1871)died young. Elmira Hurt died on 18 January 1913 and was buried beside her husband in East End Cemetery in Wytheville.
The Papers consist of an 1841 letter to Fleming Kean Rich from his brother-in-law George W. Moyers, an 1860 Vlanetine card from Joseph Hurt to Elmira Rich, and 8 visiting cards from Joseph Hurt to Elmira Rich and others. Visiting cards are from Joseph Hurt, M. T. Stuart, A. G. Cox, and Letitia Rich.
