Scope and Content

Letter from an unknown Civil War soldier writing from the camp of the 11th New York Battery on February 9, 1864, to "Dear Hattie." The soldier, a lieutenant, must have placed an advertisement in a lonely hearts section of a magazine or newspaper, and this letter is his response to Hattie's reply. Admits that he embellished his description in the advertisement to attract an answer. Transcript available.
