The processing, arrangement, and description of the Carter Braxton Letters was completed prior to February 2011. Additional description was completed in February 2011.


Biographical Note

It is possible that Carter Braxton, the author of the letters, is a descendent of Carter Braxton, who signed the Declaration of Independence. The letter was written from Chericoke, which is the plantation built by Carter Braxton and remains in the family today.

Scope and Content

The collection contains copies of four letters written by Carter Braxton from Chericoke in King William County, Virginia to Dr. C.C. Cocke of Fluvanna County, Virginia. The letters mention estates, debts, and the McCormick Reaper.
