Abstract
The collection contains correspondence, letters, photocopies of articles about her work and the awards she has received. Op-ed pieces she wrote, a family photograph, a firm brochure, and colored photocopies of finished projects by her firm are also included.

The Elizabeth Chu Richter Architectural Collection was donated to Special Collections in 1997 and an additional acquisition occurred in 2002.

Processing Information

The processing, arrangement and description of the Elizabeth Chu Richter Architectural Collection commenced in December, 1997. The finding aid was updated and encoded in August 2010.


Biographical Information

Elizabeth Chu Richter was born in Nanjing China in 1949. In 1963, before starting high school, she moved to the United States. She attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated with a degree in architecture in 1974. While raising three children, Chu Richter worked part time on larger projects with her husband, a fellow graduate of the University of Texas. In 1989, Chu Richter and her husband began working full time at their firm, Richter Architects, in Corpus Christi Texas. In 1999, one of the firm's projects, the Brooks County Safety Rest Area, received numerous awards including the AIA Honor Award for Architecture. She also devotes much time to public design education.

Scope and Content

The Elizabeth Chu Richter Architectural Collection consists of correspondence, letters written which detail the career and personal life of Elizabeth and her husband, David. Numerous articles about the awards given to the Brooks County Safety Rest Area, and the Richter's residence, are also featured. Op-ed pieces that Chu has written and articles featuring the Richter's practice, color photocopies of the rest area and the Richter's projects in Texas are included.
