Scope and Content

The papers consist of 9 items documenting the World War I U. S. Army career of Alfred Dickinson Barksdale (VMI Class of 1911). Barksdale served in France in the 116th Infantry, 29th Division, from 1917-1919. Included is a letter from Barksdale to his sister, dated August 20, 1918, written shortly after his arrival in France. He comments on the visit of Gen. John J. Pershing to his regimental HQ and other activities. Also included are 3 snapshots of Barksdale, circa 1918; and items relating to the award of the Croix de Guerre. Barksdale (b. 1892 d. 1972) subsequently had a distinguished career as a lawyer and judge in the U. S. District Court for Western Virginia.
