Biographical/Historical Information

Spencer Leslie Carter, son of Thomas H. and Susan Carter, was born in King William County, Virginia on May 10, 1873. He entered the Virginia Military Institute in 1889 and graduated in 1893. Carter spent his career as a businessman, holding executive positions in various corporations, including the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corporation. He married Roberta Atkinson on November 30, 1904; the couple had two daughters, Eda and Susan. Carter died in Richmond, Virginia on July 3, 1950. He is buried at Hollywood (Richmond, VA) Cemetery.

Scope and Content Information

The Spencer L. Carter Collection contains two items dating from Carter's Virginia Military Institute cadetship. Included is a notebook (binding missing) compiled by Carter, concerning VMI football and baseball. It includes lists of teams, game scores, and plays. The collection also contains an annotated copy of "The VMI Scrapbook," a compilation of cadet poetry and prose published in 1891. Carter added notes concerning the VMI Class of 1893, cadet officers, and Kappa Alpha Fraternity members.
