Papers of John Lee Buchanan, Accession #112, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This collection was loaned to the Library by John B. May of Indianhead College, North Carolina in September 1938.
This collection, 1854-1936, contains printed and handwritten materials and photographs pertaining to the life of John Lee Buchanan (1831-1922). A native of Virginia, Buchanan was elected president of Emory and Henry College in 1878, president of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) in 1886, and president of the University of Arkansas in 1892, where he served until his retirement in 1904. Thirty-three typed and four autograph speeches reflect his personal views on a variety of topics, including the problems of the United States during the pre-Civil War years, religion, and morals. Two bound journals, 1854 and 1857, contain handwritten copies of many of his typed public addresses, and the latter volume also contains notes on his study of English law.
