Acquisition Information
This collection was made a gift to the Library on May 5, 1987 by J.B. Lankes of Hampton, Virginia and Mrs. Madeleine de Barthe Schuermann of Temple Hill, Maryland.
Scope and Content Information
The thirty-five items, 1933-1934, contained in this collection pertain to J.J. Lankes ' illustration of W.R. Burnett's short story The Goodhues of Sinking Creek in its book form. Included are ten woodblocks, ten documentary prints, five two-color prints, and nine letters (electrostatic copies) from Arthur W. Rushmore of Harper & Brothers Publishers. According to J.B. Lankes , each illustration was made by using two blocks, one a tint block. The documentary prints of the tint blocks were made with black ink on vellum; and, the two-color prints, using green and black ink, were made with two blocks.
