Scope and Content Information

This addition to the Warren Chappell Collection consists of ca. 55 items, 1897, 1931-1985, and contains correspondence, artwork and illustrations, printed material, and miscellaneous materials, chiefly items removed from books given by Mr. Chappell to the Rare Books Division.

The letters were written to Chappell concerning various aspects of printing or books designed by him from either the authors or publishers of the books. Correspondents include: Dorothy Abbe (1974 Jan 17); Laurence G. Avery (1967 Oct 26); Joseph Blumenthal (1978 Sep 5); Susan L. Ellis (1976 Oct 6); Alfred Fairbank (1967 Jan 18; 1976 Aug 10); Charles Fairman (1971 Nov 18); Harry Ford (1960 Nov 2); Sidney R. Jacobs (1961 Feb 28; 1965 Jan 18); Herbert H. Johnson (1971 Nov 5); Diana Klemin (1970 Feb 11); Mills Lane (1973 Aug 5 & Nov 1); William Maxwell (ca. 1961); Walter Millis (1931 Aug 30); Henry Clarence Pitz (1975 Sep 11); E.H. Shepard (1961 May 15); Jane Stockman Thorpe (1975 Oct 29); Pauline Turnbull (n.y. Oct 23; & n.d.); and Harold G. Wolff (ca. 1968).

Among the printed and miscellaneous items are newsclippings re Isabel Bishop Wolff, The History of the Supreme Court , and May Lansfield Keller: Life and Letters ; a presentation slip from Gordon N. Ray; an example of type design by Frederic W. Goudy; and an article entitled "Storia dell'Imperatore che voleva la notte nelle Paroee."
