Acquisition Information

This collection was given to the Library by Matthew Bruccoli of Columbia, South Carolina, in honor of his father, Joseph M. Bruccoli, on January 14, 1992.

Scope and Content Information

This addition to the Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Collection consists of two scrapbooks, ca. 1917-1919, containing photographs, maps, military newspapers, itineraries, operational notes, and memoranda, compiled by Thomas C. Kyle, a reporter for the Chicago Examiner, as a World War I press package, and loose material from the scrapbooks, including nine photographs of World War I scenes (1918), a description of the "Meuse- Argonne Battle" by Captain Arthur E. Hartzell, Inf., U.S.A., and a pin shaped like a helmet worn by women during the Great War as a symbol of patriotism.

The material in the first scrapbook, "Activities of the Services of Supply American Expeditionary Forces 1917-1919" illustrates the activities of the Quartermaster Corps during the embarkation of 1919 from Bordeaux, France, including the American Salvage Service, the Storage Depots, and the Ordnance Repair Shops (Mehun, France).

The second scrapbook, "General Headquarters and Operations of the American Expeditionary Force 1917-1919" has material concerning operations, training, intelligence gathering, the general staff, and information. It also contains maps and material about the battles of St. Mihiel Salient and the Meuse-Argonne Campaign, and the march to the Rhine.
