Scope and Content Information
This collection consists of twenty-one photographs removed from a scrapbook recording the construction of the final leg of the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railroad in 1913 and taken by the 2nd United States Engineer's Office, Cincinnati, Ohio. The work was being done near "The Breaks" on the Big Sandy River at the Virginia-Kentucky border in Dickenson County, and the photographs show river scenes, tunnels at Pool's Point, Hill's Mill, and Skagg's Hole, rail beds, construction workers, and Elkhorn City, Kentucky. Also present are four other photographs: two of Natural Tunnel, Scott County, Virginia, an unidentified tunnel near Pennington Gap, Lee County, Virginia, and one of an unidentified road running along a river. For further information see The Clinchfield Railroad by William Way.
