Laura (Riding) Jackson Letter to Miss Fremlin, Accession #8450-a, Special Collections, University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
Purchase 1995 January 10
Expressing at length her views on language, writing that "primitive language --was not an outside thing, but a first effort of relation, evaluation --of finding the central principle within the outside conglomeration presented to the senses. Civilized language is not made out of primitive language, but results from the long laborious perfecting of the first centralizing impulses." She further explains her view of writing as "a question of evaluation" not "'turning outside things into inside things'."
