Scope and Content
This collection consists of a single black and white photograph, 10 x 20 inches, ca. 1917, of Staige Davis Blackford ( Johnnie Blackford ) and his World War I unit, S.S.U. 516, one of two ambulance units formed at the University of Virginia in May 1917. The photograph was probably taken in the early fall of 1917 while the unit was training at Allentown or later at Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania . Staige Davis Blackford wrote a brief unit history for John S. Patton 's Alumni News piece on the University in the Great War, later printed separately as The University of Virginia in the World War .
