William Cabell Rives (1793-1868), American statesman and diplomat, writes from Washington, D.C., to Secretary of the Navy Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853), on March 6, 1838. He sends a letter of introduction for Fred A. Shuck of Virginia who seeks federal employment as an engineer.
