Scope and Content

This collection consists of two survey maps of Virginia coal fields, 1905 and 1917. The "Map of Land Purchased from T.W. Shelton Estate, Pkin, Virginia by the Pulaski  next hit Iron Company , previous hit Pulaski  next hit, Virginia , " ca. 14 x 17 inches, dated March 21, 1917, also shows the adjoining properties of the T.W. Shelton Estate, the Bell Catlett Miller Company and that of M.M. Caldwell . The previous hit Pulaski  next hit Iron Company was incorporated in 1884 by Northern capitalists who constructed a 150-ton coke-fired furnace which became the second largest industry in previous hit Pulaski  next hit previous hit County  next hit until the company failed in the early 1930's.

The second item, 6 feet by 2 feet & 7 inches, is a "Map of Land belonging to Deep Water Coal & Coke Company , incorporated, [Glen Burke], Tazewell previous hit County , Virginia , 1905, traced from blueprint, November 18, 1936, by Carter Coal Company , Coalwood, West Virginia . " It shows the position of the Clinch River , the Norfolk and Western Railway , [Big Town ?] Hill Creek , and Mud Lick Creek . It also lists the names of the lessors and lessees of the coal and timber rights, including Hill Creek Coal Company, Inc. ; Wilson Coal Corporation ; Glen Burke Coal Corporation ; Field Scott Coal Company ; Red Ash Coal & Coke Company ; Carter Coal Company ; W.C. McCorkle & Wife ; Goodloe Bros. & Company ; Richlands Brick Corporation ; and W.T. Lebedur .
