Biographical Information

Stanley T. Greene (1887-1968) was born in Ashburn, VA, 18 Oct 1887, to Charles P. Greene (1842-1928), a mechanic, and Mary E. Green (1855-1912). Greene was a noted horseman. He joined the military 5 Jun 1917 while employed as a jockey at Belmont Park racetrack in Elmont, NY. Greene is buried in Union Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.

General Billy Mitchell (1879-1936), who is depicted in the photograph with Greene, was a leader of the Army Air Services during World War I. He was a pioneer of U.S. airpower, believing Japan to be a serious threat to American security. Mitchell was given the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously in 1948.

The collection consists of a letter and a photograph. The letter was written by Corporal Stanley T. Greene on 8 Aug 1918, to Mrs. J.A. (Annie) Francis. The photograph of Stanley Greene and General Billy Mitchell, ca. 1920, is a print from a scanned image.
