According to family tradition, George Scatterday (ca. 1734-1768) came to the American Colonies from Scotland about 1750. He settled on a farm near Leesburg in Loudoun County, Virginia and married Esther Craig (ca. 1745-1812) in 1765. They established their home in western Loudoun County, Virginia where they raised two boys, Aaron (1765-1795) and John (1766-1844). After George died, Esther married Lewis Reece (before 1742-1802/03) in 1769.
John Scatterday moved to Ohio around 1803. Over time other members of the Scatterday family moved to Ohio and Iowa, with later generations eventually scattering to various western states.
This collection covers family members in a number of states, and contains genealogical information connecting Scatterday, Craig, Reece, Neff, Ewers, Barton, Ault, and Phillips families. Included with the documents is a family tree called the Old Scatterday Scroll.
There are 63 folders divided between two boxes; some of the folders contain information relating to several individuals. The folders contain papers as arranged and divided by Glen Scatterday, who assigned each of item a number, using a system which he describes on page 1 of his index. These files are largely comprised of photocopies of documents, letters, newspaper clippings, photographs, birth, death, and marriage certificates. The earliest date is 1765 and the last, 1996. Scatterday records births going back to "abt.1540" and up to 2002.
