Biographical Information

Little information is available about Samuel Carr and John C. Carr. Research suggests these two members of the Carr family are descendents of John Carr, known as the Emigrant, who was born in 1684 in County Down, Ireland. He moved to Loudoun County, VA about 1750, died in 1794 and is buried in Union Cemetery in Leesburg, VA. Samuel Carr appears to have been the grandson of Thomas Carr, eldest son of John, the Emigrant. He was born July 1814 and died in 1881. John Calhoun Carr, 26 March 1849-20 September 1915, was the great-grandson of Peter Carr, 1740-1812, the youngest son of the Emigrant.

Scope and Content

Of the ten items comprising the collection, six of the items are from John C. Carr: Four are signed promissory notes, apparently representing installment payments, for land sold by order of the Circuit Court of Loudoun County, VA in the case of Carr vs. Carr. This is probably the case of Elizabeth Carr (wife of Samuel, born ca. 1817) and others versus Samuel Carr's administrators. The case involves land which had been conveyed in trust to John Alexander to secure a debt allegedly owed by Samuel Carr. The land was advertised for sale and apparently was sold since the notes indicate John C. Carr bought some of this land. Two documents are from Samuel Carr's estate: a receipt in payment of an insurance premium, and a tax bill, indicating his estate still owned 230 3/4 acres in 1883. Two of the papers are land leases.
