Historical Information

The State Teachers College in East Radford, VA, applied for and received funding from various federal agencies for the contruction of several buildings, a new heating plant, and other campus improvements between the years 1933-1939 as part of the New Deal. This funding helped what is today called Radford University build Walker, Norwood, and Reed Halls as well as the President's house, a heating plant and various landscaping projects.

Scope and Content

The New Deal Buildings Documents detail documents pertaining to the building of a dining hall (Walker Hall), a dormitory (Norwood Hall), a science building (Reed Hall), a president's house (built where Heth Hall stands), a heating plant, and landscaping projects at what was then The State Teachers College and is now known as Radford University between the years 1933 and 1939.

For Walker Hall these documents include, but are not limited to bids, estimates, contracts, invoice, blueprints and disbursement vouchers. For Reed Hall the documents included are equipment and heating specifications, state approval documents and assorted blueprints.

Documents pertaining to the President's house and Norwood Hall are housed in box 5 of this collection. Dormitory (Norwood Hall) documents include furniture documents, assorted blueprints, building, elevator and furniture specificiations and general specifications in the form of booklets. Documents related to the President's house are heating system and lighting fixture specifications as well as general specifications.

Heating Plant documents are found in box 6 and include radical brick, steam boiler equipment, stocker equipment, underground electrical system, brick setting work and boilers and boiler plant contracts. As well as an amendatory application from 1939 and an engineer's letter from 1938. Finally, this collection holds Public Works Administration (PWA) financial records and grant applications from 1935-1941 such as disbursement records for the years 1938-1941, 1935 PWA application and documents, certificate of indebtedness and 1934 State Board of Education Emergency Bond meeting minutes.
