Biographical/Historical Information

A Faculty Senate, also known as an academic senate, is a governing body that is typically the supreme academic authority for the institution that is made up of members of the faculty from various units within the university. Usually, the Senate creates university academic policy that applies to the university while keeping in mind that any policy created must fit into policy made by the university system by adhering to accreditation standards etc... The Faculty Senate meets periodically with an agenda and keep minutes of the meetings. The Senate normally has several committees, both standing and task specific, which are assigned particular areas of policy to work with.

The Faculty Senate at Radford University is made up of an Executive Council as well as representatives from the various colleges in the university. the Artis College of Science and Technology, College of Business and Economics, College of Education and Development, College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, College of Visual and Performing Arts, McConnell Library and Waldron College of Health and Human Services all have representatives to the Faculty Senate at Radford University.

Scope and Content

The RU Faculty Senate Papers contains reports, minutes, and other documentation related to the Radford University Faculty Senate and previous previous internal governance bodies. These records are incomplete and are scattered throughout the unprocessed Radford University archival materials. Every effort will be made to create as consistent and complete record of faculty internal governance as possible. The processed materials available in this collection include College Senate Meeting Minutes from 1913-1935 and Faculty Senate Meeting Minutes from 1942-1948.

Also included are three boxes of College Senate Records that range from 1949- 1956 and include articles such as Faculty Fund materials, Committee on Catalog Study from 1951-1952, and a pamphlet on the Roanoke Meeting of the Faculty Senate in September 1951. This collection further contains Faculty Senate minutes and reports (all incomplete) from 1969- 1972 as well as course proposals brought to the Senate and SCHEV reports.

Arrangement

Contains papers and bound materials of reports prior to 1994. Materials from 1994-present are Microsoft Word files copied to CD-Rom.These records are incomplete and are scattered throughout the unprocessed Radford University archival materials. Every effort will be made to create as consistent and complete record of faculty internal governance as possible.
