During this period, and until 1932, Redd also coached freshman football. In 1932, he was promoted to the head coaching position. His first VPI team only lost one game in its first season. After the 1940 football season, Redd resigned his position as head coach and returned to working full time as alumni secretary. Redd died in 1960.
