The newspapers in this collection have been donated to Special Collections over time. Additional materials may be added in the future.

Processing Information

An inventory of the newspapers was created during the summer of 2011. Description of the collection was completed in July 2012. Additional newspapers added in June 2017.


Scope and Content

This collection consists of individual issues of Virginia newspapers. In some cases, this is a single issue; in other cases, there may be multiple issues. Newspapers represent cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth and date from the start of the Civil War up through the 1970s.

Arrangement

The physical collection is arranged alphabetically by city or town. The contents list below is organized by city or town and contains a list of paper titles in each box. The city or town of origination is included with the title. Under each title is a list of holdings. The general format is "date, volume, issue number." Some titles may only list dates or dates and volumes.

A spreadsheet with information about specific holdings (titles, dates, volume and issue numbers, cities/towns of publication, and, when available, cost and editors) can be downloaded online . The spreadsheets allows for easy sorting by any category.
