The processing and description of the John Brick Book Manuscript commenced and was completed in December 2008.
John Brick, author of historical novels and children's books, was born in Newburgh, New York in 1922. After attending the Newburgh Free Academy, Brick studied creative writing at Columbia University. He served as editor of Export Trade from 1945 to 1949. In 1950, Troubled Spring became his first published novel, followed by The Raid , Homer Crist , The Rifleman , and Jubilee , which was published in 1956. During the 1960s, Brick served as a staff writer for Life magazine; assistant to the president of the University of Toledo, Ohio; and on the staff of the U. S. Senate Permanent Investigations Subcommittee. John Brick died in 1973.
This collection consists of an undated typescript draft of John Brick's American Civil War novel, Jubilee , which follows the fictional 195th New York Infantry as it joins Sherman's army at the Battle of Lookout Mountain and participates in Sherman's "march to the sea." The draft comprises 498 double-spaced pages (the final page, 499, is missing). The draft contains no handwritten or other revisions.
The collection retains its original arrangement, by page number.
