Biographical Note

Samuel Herbert Knick, son of Samuel and Mary Ann Reynolds Knick, was born in Virginia on February 1, 1886. In the 1900 federal census, Knick is listed among the inhabitants in the home of his mother in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Catalogs of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) list Knick as a special student during the 1902/1903 term and a sophomore in 1904/1905. He later worked as a mail clerk and as a farmer. Samuel H. Knick died on May 19, 1914, and was buried in Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery, Collierstown (Rockbridge County), Virginia.

Scope and Content

This collection contains papers of Samuel Herbert Knick (1886-1914) of Rockbridge County, Virginia, all relating to Knick's time as a student of Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (VPI, now Virginia Tech). The collection includes a 1905/1906 VPI student handbook. Also included are a letter and postcard sent by Knick to his brother, Hampton Knick, while Herbert Knick was encamped in St. Louis, Missouri with cadets visiting the World's Fair. Knick very briefly describes his train trip from Christiansburg and conditions in the camp.
