On August 14, 1861, Tyler enlisted as a private in Company I, 7th Michigan Infantry. He was promoted to corporal on March 1, 1862 and to sergeant on September 24, 1863 before being discharged on August 22, 1864. Following the war, Tyler returned to Michigan, and the 1870 federal census lists him as a 29-year-old farmer living in Kalamazoo with wife Mary, 30, and two young daughters. The 1900 census shows the Tylers living in Cedar Creek (Wexford County), Michigan. Cyril H. Tyler died in Manton (Wexford County), Michigan on November 18, 1913, and was buried in Manton's Fairview Cemetery.
